Get Your Overseas Trade Licence Recognised in Australia

Helping overseas-qualified tradespeople get their skills recognised in Australia

If you’re an overseas-qualified tradesperson, getting your skills recognised in Australia isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. The correct pathway depends on your trade and your long-term plans.

That’s where Skill Shortage Solutions come in. This is a company ran by an Irish guy, Jason that moved to Australia in 2008. The sole objective of his business to help people get their overseas trade licenses recognised in Australia. He is the guy you need to speak too. I've sent many overseas tradies to him already that have successfully went through the process.

Licensed Trades (Important)

If you’re a licensed trade, such as:

- Electrician

- Plumber

- Refrigeration / Air Conditioning Mechanic

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is NOT recommended.

Going down the wrong path can:

- Delay or block trade licensing

- Cause issues with future migration skills assessments

Instead, licensed trades should go through the Offshore Skills Assessment Program (OSAP) — the exact process Skill Shortage Solutions specialise in.

What you get:

- Trade recognition that allows you to apply for a provisional licence in Australia.

- A migration skills assessment (valid for 3 years).

- Clear guidance on what’s needed to obtain a full licence in any state.

Non-Licensed Trades

If you’re a non-licensed trade, such as:

- Carpenter

- Fitter / Machinist

- Chef

- Mechanic / Fitter

- Metal Fabricator / Welder

And many more

You have two possible pathways, depending on your goals:

Option 1: Planning to apply for PR?

If permanent residency is part of your plan, Skill Shortage Solutions is the recommended pathway.

You’ll receive:

A nationally recognised Australian qualification

A migration skills assessment (valid for 3 years)

Option 2: Just want to work ASAP?

If your priority is getting into mining or FIFO work as quickly as possible, RPL may be suitable — but note:

You will not receive a migration skills assessment

You may still need OSAP later if you apply for PR.
